Changes and advances in the technological world rarely happen smoothly. These changes and advances are in pulses commonly known as a revolution in the technological world. Telecommunications have progressed from the previously used telegraph to the modern day telephone. Other changes are from copper wires to the fiber-optics and from the analog to the digital among many others. This pattern of technological changes and advancements hold true in virtually all the industrial fields where each of revolution opens the door to new innovations and opportunity leading to the revolutions in the industries and the society at large. It is no difference in the automobile industry where the pulses of revolution are being driven by the connectivity convergence which is the wireless technology. Wireless technology has seen the automakers such as GM and Ford develop dramatically safer, smarter, and more energy-efficient vehicles for their customers in the markets around the world.

Wireless Technology in the Field of Auto Mobile Industry

Major technological developments and improvements in computation, smartphones, computers, cloud and wireless communications have converged thus advancing safety to the various connected technology consumers. One the other hand the same technological developments and improvements have significantly changed the auto mobile industry. Additionally, more changes and improvements are on the way. According to the projections, there will be an increase in the percentage of new passenger vehicles globally shipping installed with factory telematics to about 65%. In the future, there might be possibilities that cars will be talking to each other and the roadway courtesy of wireless technology. The car-tocar information sharing, powered by the wireless technology, will be able to alert vehicles behind that car ahead are caught up in a jam thus serving as a warning to the drivers on the motorway to preparing to reduce their speeds and slow down (Flandez, 2006).

Wireless technology will also enable the stop signs, traffic lights, and other traffic signs to communicate effectively with vehicles because sensors will be able to give reports if there is a possibility of another vehicle running a red light. Additionally, through the wireless technology, there might be synchronization of the traffic lights thus improving the flow of the traffic and fuel efficiency. If there will be one or few vehicles sitting at a traffic light late at night, the wireless technology could enable the programming of the light to turn green to enable the flow of the traffic (Flandez, 2006).

Practical Applications of Wireless Technology

The application of wireless technology will help increase the demand for vehicles and indirect growth of the automobile industry. Below are some of the practical applications of the wireless technology in the automobile industry (Oh, 2014):

Trailer Tracking

Customers in the modern global market may have many questions and influence in the way their goods are delivered. By the application of the wireless technology in the tracking of the trailer, one can answer such questions with real-time location, and the distance needs to cover before arriving at the facility. Therefore, wireless technology has enabled tracking of the current location, and the position of the vehicles’ trailer unit using a wireless unit fitted to the trailer and a wireless method that returns the location and position of the trailer (Oh, 2014).

Vehicle Tracking

All the automobiles regardless of the make can easily be tracked remotely from the comfort of one’s office or home using the wireless technology. It is possible through the use of wireless vehicle technology referred to as telematics which is achieved by combining GPS and GSM transmitter and receiver embedded in the vehicle. This wireless technology in vehicles is commonly use by the transportation and delivery businesses with huge fleets of vehicles and goods.

Taxi companies, truck delivery companies, vehicle maintenance companies, and other units in the large automobile industry can use this wireless enabled technology to track workers as well as planning important and sophisticated vehicle routes. The application of wireless technology in this way has increased efficiency and reduced losses caused by human error. Therefore, more automobile companies will be willing to spend any amount of money on the wireless tracking system for security (Oh, 2014).

Cold Store

By the application of the wireless technology, the automobile industry can achieve cold storage monitoring. By the integration of the sensors in the wireless technology, temperature and humidity conditions can easily be measured thus providing real-time data and information. Additionally, it will also help know the current temperatures of the goods being transported. The application of the wireless technology helps to send monitor data every time. This data is used in the analysis of temperature variance from time to time. This is a significant application of wireless technology in the automobile industry.

Satellite Navigation

Satellite navigation in the light of wireless technology can be comprehensively defined as safe guiding of the vehicles to an unknown place to reach its destination. It is not an easy task having a paper map inside the car while driving to know where one is and the destination they are supposed to reach. However, the application of the wireless enabled GPS navigation system; one can easily know the destination, where they are, and the main landmarks around by easily observing. The wireless system also guides the driver by displaying the map of the route together with the distance between the starting point and their destination. Through wireless technology, the system will help the drivers to overcome some problems faced by the drivers when traveling to unknown places (Oh, 2014).

Impacts of Wireless Technology in Automobiles

The application of the wireless technology in the automobile industry has led to wide benefits. Wireless technology helps in the collection of a large amount of data beyond mileage. Among the benefits is the use of the data and information in the creation of value-added automobile services. It also increases accuracy in pricing, reducing leakage of claims, reduction in the loss costs and therefore lowering expenses. Some specific areas which have been impacted greatly include (Raja Sekhar et al., 2016):

  1. Improvements in the customer services
  2. Lowering the cost of acquisition
  • Reduction in the operating expenses
  1. Automation of the repair processing
  2. Reduction in fraud
  3. Reduction in unauthorized usage of the vehicles
  • Easy recovery of the stolen vehicles
  • Accuracy in pricing
  1. Improvement in the retention of renewal
  2. Improvement in the determination of Negative liability Impacts of Wireless Technology in Automobile

The application of the wireless technology in the automobile industry involves the idea of integration of the automobiles as completely as possible. This application includes putting mobile services, GPS and GPRS systems, and weather systems among many other wireless technological ideas in automobiles to serve the desires of the technologically evolving automobile consumers. The application of the wireless technology in the automobiles is theoretically a great idea. However, there a few negative impacts of completely integrated automobiles. Below are some of the negative impacts of wireless technology in the automobile industry (Dolan, 2010):

  1. The high cost of installation
  2. Challenges in tracking
  • Challenges of the wireless technology functionality
  1. Wireless technology is easily distracted
  2. Vast errors involved in the process of identification

This paper has explored some of the currently in use and upcoming wireless technology applications in the automobile industry. It has also identified some of the basic wireless technology applications which rely on these technologies. There are many open issues which require discussion and to addressed under the wireless technology in the automobile industry. One of the issues which require being addressed is the wireless automobile technology which relies on the real-time wireless communication and which can effectively support the applications. Another one is the integration of wireless technology with the interoperability challenges which could be expected with the wireless application technology in the automobile industry. With proper addressing of the challenges, it will be seen that wireless technology represents significance opportunity in the automobile industry. There are also various ways through which value can be created using wireless technology in the automobile industry many of which need to be fully exploited.
