Week 5 Template Qualitative article
Purpose statement

The article by Arieli Daniella is an inductive qualitative research study that aims to find the experiences of Israeli nursing students in their clinical placement. Their experiences are in a setting with diversity. The researcher aims to find how these nurses cope with the emotional challenges in such a setting (Arieli, 2013).
Problem statement

The main problem is to establish how nursing students learn in clinical placements and how to promote better learning among nurses when placed in a diverse setting (Arieli, 2013).

Literature Review

The literature review section presents the previous studies that have explored the topic of clinical placement and the stressful and emotional challenges that nurses go through. The study by Burgos and Levett-Jones  (Arieli, 2013) is one of them which show that students can progress in their clinical placement when their needs of security, safety, belongings and self-concept are made possible. The studies that the researcher uses are relevant to the research topic and are up to date.
Framework or Theoretical Perspective

The study’s theoretical framework is the phenomenological sociology on theoretical grounding for a qualitative inductive logic analysis and qualitative research method. The framework enables the researcher to find an in-depth view of nursing students and how they perceive their reality (Arieli, 2013).
Research questions and hypotheses

What are your experiences on clinical placements that are a diverse setting?

How do you cope with stress and emotional challenges involved?

Variables (dependent & independent)

The dependent variable is the clinical placement. The independent variables are student’s attitudes and views of coping with the emotional challenges (Arieli, 2013).

Method

Appropriateness of Design

The researcher uses the inductive qualitative research method to carry out in-depth interviews among 20 students. This research design is an appropriate one for a phenomenological socially that aims to explore the views of how researchers experience and perceive their daily reality (Arieli, 2013).

Validity of the research

The research sample is a very small size which may jeopardize the validity of the research. Only twenty of nursing students is a tiny sample that makes it difficult to generalize the findings of this study in other settings (Arieli, 2013).
Efficacy of the study

Were questions resolved

The study managed to show the emotional challenges that students were experiencing in their clinical placement for example, patient’s death and suffering. The researcher also managed to answer the research questions on the factors causing emotional challenge among students for example the poor relationship between clinical instructors and nursing students. Thus, there was the need for supervision through -consultation to help clinical instructors (Arieli, 2013).

Legal & Ethical issues

The research ethical approval was from the college ethics committee as well as the head of the nursing department in approving the study. Each of the participants got information on the project’s nature and willingly agreed to take part is the study. Their confidentiality was promised and fulfilled (Arieli, 2013).

Cultural aspects

The sample of the study took into consideration the cultural aspects. The participants were from various races and cultural backgrounds. There were ten Arabs, 9 Jews, and one Circassia. The Sample is representative of the gender composition of, the national and ethnic composition of the classroom (Arieli, 2013).
Sample

The sample is from a sample group of third –year students eligible to take part in the study. From some 80 third year students, the ones willing to participate were 20 students. These are ten Arabs comprising of five women and five men. There were nine Jews of which 7 were women and two men and finally a Circassian (Arieli, 2013).
Procedures

Each of the participant interviews was one at a time. The interviews structure had the same request nature such as” please inform me about your personal clinical experience. The interview was also designed in a way to allow participants to speak freely. The findings from the interview were on an inductive content analysis. The analysis had three main parts. First is the category of the emotional experiences of the student. The second is a categorization of the main type of emotional work that contributes to emotional strain. The last category is the analysis of student’s references to the impact and issues of diversity to their emotional work (Arieli, 2013).
Results

The study presents the three major experiences that are vital in showing students accounts about their clinical placements and how they cope with challenges of their emotional work. The study shows that students work with emotional strains such as disgust, ambivalence, stress, frustration, and conflict. Data shows the three main relations such as students with their fellow students in their teams, relationships with clinical instructors and relationship with patients (Arieli, 2013).

Results and future nursing practice

The results show that the experiences of nursing students in clinical experiences should regard the emotional work and challenge and the right coping strategies. The results also show the need to consider the diversity present in a clinical placement environment and how to help students in their learning and practical experience by giving them the support they need (Arieli, 2013).
Student’s nursing practice

The research shows that nursing students experience a distinct challenge when placed in a culturally diverse setting. Such a setting impacts on how they emotionally react to work. It is crucial for educators to seek ways of promoting a genuine care as well as an effective nursing in such a setting (Arieli, 2013).
