Hefty hardware decision makers are intending to develop a savvy program that will get used in accomplishing the business needs. In an attempt to find the solutions in a better way, the business has created time for strategic meetings so that they can share on how new developments gets made. The company consists of two different parties who should work together; the business and the Information Technology side. However, the there exists an indifference between the two parties simply because they do not share a common idea. Cheryl is eager to see the project of developing the savvy program up and running, but she does not seem to understand the IT because they talk about technical issues which seem hard to know. The IT is concerned too, but they consider the current situation of the infrastructure and bandwidth. From the IT view, it may seem sensible even though all that the business wants is to see the program working. According to the IT department, they have to consider the efficiency of the system so that they are not blamed for developing a useless program after they deploy it. The managers have to make a good decision because if they do not listen to both parties, it may result in increased conflict in the future. The company spends so much for the IT to work so as to realize their goal, and therefore IT staff should be responsible for developing a program that is useful and which supports the business goals.

At the strategic meeting, another conflict arose when Paul was trying to convince Cheryl about cell phone promotion experiments, but the IT guys brought up topics related to security and connectivity, which at the end it led to confusion among the business side. Most of what happens show that the business leaders have to get the information from both sides.

Issues at Hefty Hardware

Firstly, there is poor communication between the business and the IT. The communication between both parties seems biased, and one way as each of them wants to listen. Secondly, the business does not see the value of work carried out on the IT side. The IT seems to be concerned with technicalities without getting involved in main business goals. Also, the partnership and coordination between the IT and business is poor as while the business is on one side concerned with developing business strategies to come up with a savvy program, the IT on the other side do not know what is going on. Another major issue is that the managers are incapable of leading their staff as effectively. They have ineffective leadership skills, and that is why they face issues in management. Also, there are too many politics going on such that the staff with low influential abilities is not given equal chances with the others. The politics consequently leads to poor communication. There is also a great rift between the corporate and the retail sector and therefore when making decisions it takes time for those decisions to get implemented. The IT complains that the Chief Information Officer (CIO) is short-staffed. The IT is one single department with many activities going one and therefore having limited staffs and managers is a risk to the efficiency of the department. Poor planning of time is also common in the hardware since it is evident that lack of planning has led to conflicts and inefficiencies.



Situation at Hefty Analysis

The situation is not good at all. There are complaints from both sides, which if not controlled it may lead to major conflict. Hefty hardware made proposals to develop a savvy program that will be used in the business operations to achieve the desired goals. However, the business and the IT sides are conflicting and show no cooperation. By thoroughly analyzing the case study, it seems that the IT does not actively engage in strategic meeting and therefore the business side is not pleased with such behavior.

Effectiveness, shortcomings of IT and Business

From the hefty hardware case, it is clearly seen that the relationship between Information Technology department and the business side is poor. Both sides are faced with communication problems since they have different agendas to undertake. The overall business goals are not met due to lack of strong partnership between the two groups.

The limitations of are that based on the discussions, Cheryl O’Shea, and Glen complains that the IT are only concerned about technical issues while they know nothing about what is going on in the business. Glen observed that his staff complains that the IT merely understands the basic business functions.Besides, the business also faces shortcomings in that they do not communicate and co-operate with the IT staff. The business side does not provide their requirements to IT department, rather, they require them to do some tasks which are not part of their responsibilities.

IT and Business Collaboration

According to the issues at Hefty Hardware, the best idea towards the delivery of the savvy program is to establish interaction and cooperation between the two groups, the IT, and business side. Team building is one of the important aspects used in accomplishing the goals of the business (Khosrowpour et al., 1999). By establishing interaction and co-operation, they will share ideas and work together towards achieving objectives. Teams built from persons who share similar ideas are important because it thrives and succeeds.

Communication is also another important factor. The hardware should emphasize that the employees should be open-minded so that they can share ideas, and views. With good communication, both parties can work together so as to develop the project without conflicts. For example, if the business side would be open to express their requirements, and be ready to understand what the IT people recommended, then there would be no conflict (Barker, 2010). Effective communication involves the combination of multiple skills, such as stress management, assertive communication, understanding emotion and attitude, engaged listening and non-verbal cues.

Another strategy is to choose leadership-oriented managers. There is a difference between managers and leaders. Leadership is about developing conditions and situations which those under you can work independently and effectively so as to achieve a common goal (Hellman, 2014). The hefty hardware managers should develop leadership minds so that they can be able to create a business environment, where people can build teams and co-operate towards building the savvy program. By having right leaders, they will easily create a partnership; improve on communication and relationship (Gordon, 2014). The company should also define the roles and tasks to be done by the IT department and develop a relationship between them and the company’s objectives. By defining IT responsibilities, it prevents chances of them performing tasks which are unrelated to the job (Luftman, 2003).

Evaluation of the IT tasks and contribution towards the business is also very important; which gets achieved by providing defined tasks and responsibilities to the IT in such a way that it is related to the business goals. Visual representation is yet another idea of communicating ideas. The IT should develop visuals such as videos and diagrammatical representation during strategic meetings so that the business side can clearly understand what the business is all about (Dubey, 2011).The company should also introduce training and workshop so as to engage its entire staff in understanding the business goals and objectives.
